My Little Ubuntu Guide

New Live CD Available!

Ok, I finally got a Live CD image working. You can download it from the link above.

What it does is everything a normal Ubuntu Live CD does except mine comes with ATI working, Broadcom 43xx wifi working (dell 1390), and Beryl installed … and it preinstalls beryl when you install from it. Then it places a “FinishUp” icon on the Desktop so when you log into your new system you can first run that and it does all the updates, upgrades, and installs Automatix2 so you can enjoy any of the software available to you!

It’s sweet!

Check it out!

John

    John,
This sounds neat but I have a 6400/E1505 with ati X1400 1440×900, broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller, intel pro 3945 wireless, sigmatel high def audio codec, and sony dvd +-rw dw-q58a.

Can I try your cd and make some fixes, or what would you suggest?

I’ve been trying ubuntu for a couple months on another computer that everything just worked with dapper 6.06,except the usrobotics wireless which I got running.

    Thanks John

    Hey John

It should work perfectly for you! The only thing you may need to do is adjust the resolution for your screen. I also have the x1400 ATI card. The Intel Pro Wifi should work as well without a hitch. Why not download and run the Live CD to see if it boots? You don’t have to install unless it works! The Beryl features probably won’t work during the Live CD, but they will after you install the OS to your system.

    Good luck!

    John

    John,
Wow I took the dog out and you answered. I’ll definitely try it. But first I have to figure out how I’m reinstalling windows and repartitioning. I’ll let you know how it works, but it will be a while.
    Thanks,
    John

    John,
I tried your livecd. The Ubuntu screen comes up, the bar goes back and forth for a while and the screen goes blank. It’s not off, kind of black, no blinking cursor. I let it sit for 15 minutes. Nothing else happens.

The same thing happens with Ubuntu 7.04 live cd.

Dapper live cd boots up and everything seems to work.

    What do you think.

hey, maybe you should try boot from the regular cd and using john’s awesome scripts.

anyway, I have a good ‘ol dell and john you have been a lifesaver. just wanted to let you know that I tried out your new cd and it booted without that dreadful XORG error. my only problem was that after I installed it I still saw the install menu on administrator settings. also beryl continues to show me no window borders (so I use gnome under beryl instead of emerald). so, just wanted to let you know of the few glitches. other than that everything works perfectly. i can ask of nothing more.
