In first place: GREAT JOB… i tried to install ubuntu on my 6400 before, but i desist after a couple attempts.. this time i(you) installed in the first attempt.
Now i updated my ubuntu with your new script and this ran without error.
Compiz=OK
Scroll=OK
Suspend=OK
But i have an issue: when laptop is wake up after suspension WiFi don’t work, i tried to enable via Fn+F2 and shell but nothing. I restarted the laptop and everything works fine again
That is strange. I don’t have that issue at all. What WiFi device does your laptop have? Is it Broadcom or Intel? Thanks! (email me the answer and I’ll post the fix when we find it)
do you think you could add some additional options to the next install DVD - especially if its a dvd not a cd , it would be very useful for KDE to be installed a much preferred DM ( does this or will ever work with Compiz) , also please note that if you loose connection when updating using your scripts or if you forgot to connect :-P . the scripts destroys itself pass or fail
It would be great if you could add some wireless software that works with the dells so that we have better options to connect , I would also like a script that would install LAMP.
Would it be against GPL to create a DELL Startup Splash and also logon screen just ( to add the customizarion feel )
It would be great if you could run a poll for the next update dvd, on what software would people like to include , or add a Update Cd that we can launch for config updates , dell recovery , repository updates , patches and plugins. ???
Great work and thank you …it took me about 6 days to get the dell working before you came along , now if things fail i got your disc and takes 24 mins start to fin:)
I create another user account, but in that, sound is disable. I tried to run finish and codecs script but nothing. I reviewed and sound device is detected and gstreamer lib is installed. In my original account sound is ok.
The other issue is when i change user account. Sometimes the touchpad turns disable, i can’t use it then i have to connect a usb mouse to continue working. Other times the one is the keyboard that turns disable, in this case i have to reboot my laptop.
I’ve done clean installs with each successive CD/DVD and have yet to get Beryl/Compriz to work. Admittedly, I’m a Linux newbie and even more so in re Beryl/Compriz, etc. It is noteworthy, however that such eye candy seems to work smartly when it is included on a commercial live CD distro like, for example, Mandriva Spring One 2007.
All I’ve managed after launching or reinitializing Beryl, with any of the 3 options selected, is a “shake” of any open windows followed by no eye-candy effects. Moreover, moving windows about the desktop via grab and drag was typically limited or crippled after trying Beryl launch or reinit after startup. The latest CD showed improvement in this regard, given the fact that it did not cripple drag operations after trying Beryl or Compriz.
I can live without any of the eye-candy. But of most concern is the fact that hardware temperatures are markedly higher on this machine than when I’m running Windoze XP MC. Temps start falling as soon as I switch back to XP. Examples: 36C. vs. 24C [~50% higher].
I don’t believe that the temps reached are likely higher than maximum for processors and HD, but I don’t like frying them if they can routinely be made to operate cooler. None of the higher temps were incurred by work that involved anything processor-intensive.
I’m sitting this one out until I resolve the heat issue, but I appreciate very much what you are doing in this project.
Cheers,
Don

hi
I installed your cd in my laptop. I have Inspiron 6400 with ATI X1400. But fusion doesn’t work. I tried installing xgl (it’s very slow). Are there a solution?
Thank’s for your nice CD.
I’m having a sound problem after I used your live cd. I was able to boot the CD and perform a perfect install, but after I ran the “finshup” script (and rebooted the machine) I lost all sound. The volume control has a nice red overlay on it and it gives the following message when I click on it:
The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don’t have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don’t have a sound card configured.
You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting “Remove From Panel” from the menu.
Do you have any idea how to get sound working again?
The install went awesome. But I am unable to get my wifi working on my 6400. Could you tell me how to get it working? I have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. The finish script did not work, nor did the manual script. I know you can help me… you got yours working, right?
I’d first like to say thanks for putting this thing together for us. I’d all but given up on getting Beryl/Compiz working on this machine. I installed via CD, and after some updates everything works well.
I seem to have a problem with booting though. Quite frequently I get problems along the lines of:
/dev/sda2 was not unmounted cleanly: check forced
at which point it usually find a few problems: non-contiguous disk space, multiply claimed files, messed up inodes. I let it run fsck and fix a bunch of the problems, but the same thing seems to happen again and again.
I’m not sure if it’s just that my partition is messed up, or if this install just didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped. Or even if Automatix messed some things up.
I hope someone has some ideas. I’m going to run the fsck from the live CD on my unmounted root, so hopefully that can fix things.
Again, thanks for putting this together. It’s nice to be able to show off some real eye candy to the Vista and OSX users!
