Be sure to report your errors and successes!

Remember, this version will allow you to do Wireless out of the box, ATI is installed out of the box, and Compiz-Fusion works out of the box. However, Suspend and Hibernate do not work in this version. I’m still working on that issue and Ubuntu may get ATI to fix the fglrx binary before I get a work around, so my bet is things will be working soon anyway.

    Amazingly quick!

    Can’t wait to burn it and check it out. Thanks so much, without this I would be stuck with Vista on my Dell (should’ve just gone for Ubuntu pre-installed, but need MS-Office 07 for work)

    Hi there John,

    Downloaded, checked the md5sum and burned the cd. Booted, but got the same problem I get when using the normal ubuntu gutsy cd: It boots fine until it tries to start x. Then the screen flashes with strange colors. Repeats 6 times than gives me an error saying something along the lines of “Server was shutdown 6 times in 90 seconds. Something bad is going on”.

    Also, as I stated in my previous comment, this is a problem that comes up a few times on the ubuntuforums, and I bet that’s something a lot of people will have to deal with… If I switch to command prompt, install the fglrx driver and do an aticonfig –initial, it fixes the problem, and I can log in the live cd.

    I am running an Inspiron 6400 with an x1400 card.

    Thanks for your work, I really appreciate this, and hope to get ubuntu running sometime soon.

    Update:

    After the error message:
    CTRL+ALT+F1
    aticonfig –initial
    startx
    Log in the live cd
    Install ubuntu
    Reboot

    It works, but there are still some graphic issues. After Grub, the screen goes completely black until the login screen. After login, music plays but screen goes black except for mouse cursor. When the desktop is fully loaded, the screen comes back and I can use ubuntu like usual.

    Compiz & wireless (wpa also!) work without any extra setup.

    Thanks!!!

    Hey Simon,

    Ever considered using a VM inside Ubuntu to run office? I’ve experienced just as fast operation using VMware Server to run XP.

    Hotsauce,
    I’ll work on getting a CD that has a custom xorg.conf file so those of you with this issue won’t have to worry about that. Also, anyone using Nvidia?

    John,
    Got ubuntu up and running just fine, with very pretty compiz fx.

    Have had some difficulty shutting the computer down, it seems to hang on disabling network adapters, but not too big of a problem (I leave my computer on almost 24/7

    Simon

    I will look into VMWare

    Great Simon!

    The best way to get VMWare installed that I’ve found is using Automatix. It’s very simple and straight forward.

    Cheers!

    Hello,
    I use a dell 1521 and when I upgraded from your feisty dvd to gutsy I had barely any issues, but i’ve found gutsy hangs up a lot when i did a clean install from your recent cd or the dvd off the ubuntu site.

    try virtualbox instead of vmware, it’s more(!?) open-sorce than vmware, and unless you really need specific vmware features, vbox is really good. I have had less problems moving virtual images around from computer to computer with vbox.

    Thanks a lot for the custom gutsy install cd!!

    Can you tell us if you plan to make an All-in-one CD for Gutsy just like you did for Feisty??

    Thanks

    Just wanted to point out that the lastest ATI drivers (check out the phoronix review here), now have AIGLX support.

    so you should take a look at that!

    also, i wanted to thank you for all the hard work you’re putting into this! ;)

    Thank you for all the work you’ve put into this. I installed Gusty on my Dell E1505, everything worked great in LIVE and installed. The one problem I do have is my wireless. I can use my wireless to connect to a signal that is secure (requires a key phase etc). It will not connect to a signal that is open, like a wifi hotspot. Any suggestions?

    I agree with Shaun. Definitely waiting to see how a CD with the new ATI drivers turns out! Or perhaps just a script that can properly setup the drivers based on the current beta install CD.

    Anyone have any more feedback as to the success rate of the current disc? I’m hooked on the eyecandy now, can’t go back regular old metacity!

    i was able to get everything working perfectly fine. in the install of gutsy. i am getting a little better with ubuntu. but the new ATI drivers just killed me. so if ANYBODY has a script or ::poke:: john if you want to make a script that would ust be lovely! i might just have to take you and your wife out for dinner! LOL

    Guys, I have not successfully gotten the new ATI official drivers working yet. Currently I am back on Feisty. I recommend doing this until we get things sorted out with ATI. Thanks!

    Thanks John
    for your efforts on this distro..
    I would’ve never used Ubuntu without Ur help.

    I see there is an issue of having a blank screen until Ubuntu desktop is seen this issue has been raised by Hotsauce also
    I had the same problem ,the solution is as below

    sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf
    This will edit that usplash.conf file
    Inside it’ll probably say:
    # Usplash configuration file
    xres=1280
    yres=1024

    Change this to:
    # Usplash configuration file
    xres=1024
    yres=768

    i have changed the above to 1280×800 and thats my screen resolution
    Then at the terminal prompt enter:

    sudo update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu

    taken from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/156341

    John ,do you have any solution to speed the boot time Ubuntu takes it takes around one minute to see my Desktop screen..

    Is it possible for you to reconfigure the Feisty Custom Install CD to install Compiz Fusion (instead of Compiz)and Gnome 2.20??

    Thanks

    Hey! ok im a bit behind but glad to see you didnt need to sell your laptop in the end , was worried the project would end up dead :( , well my 9400 had to be retunred to dell and should be back hopefully monday if not this Tuesday , so for now using someones 6000 instead , cant install the new version until my 9400 get back , hopefully it all works out ok , any thought about adding custom software to the DVD version installation? … i got a few hits back before you had your problem …

  20. November 11th, 2007 | 8:19 am

    Yeah, I’ll be working on that soon. Lately I’ve needed to work my paying sites so this has been a little behind, sorry folks. Remember, this site is my hobby…I still need to make a living :)

    As for the latest Gutsy stuff, as I said, I’ve gone back to Feisty for the time, it’s just more productive for me right now. Gutsy has some serious issues still, but I’ll get some time to work on that soon.

    I’ll keep you all posted.

    Thanks!
