My Little Ubuntu Guide

New Service

Hey all,

I’m thinking of providing a service that would allow you faster fixes to your problems. I just don’t know if it’s something you all would be interested in. If so, email me to let me know at john AT jrdw.com.

Here’s the idea.

For a small fee of $39.95 I’d create a custom install CD specific to your laptop. Every time there’s a new distro released, I would provide you a new CD for that distro for an additional $9.95. I know linux is free and we are all about free stuff! But I wouldn’t be able to justify my time spent on a project of this magnitude without some sort of compensation. (I have to feed my family too).

Anyway, I’m not even going to offer such a service until I get feedback from you, my visitors, as to if this is somthing you would want or pay for.

Thanks!

John

Wouldn’t it be tough to configure cds for different kinds of laptop, seeing that you don’t have the hardware to test everything?

I’m not sure I would pay for a custom cd as I tend to distro hop often, but I probably would drop 10$ in a tip jar if you managed to keep a custom cd of Ubuntu for the Dell 6400 up-to-date and working with most of the stuff…

    Thanks for your work

I think it would be better if you just included a PAYPAL donation link. I think I would give, as you’ve saved me lots of hours.

Interesting Idea. I would love to give you money…if I had it. I am a poor college kid who can barely afford anything.

When people switch to Linux, 90 percent of the time, they switch because it is free. You don’t have to pay for anything. This is the user base that you are trying to reach.

AKA: Good idea, and I would still try it. But, I doubt that you could really pay the bills with it.

After having roommates like djremix71, I’ve heard that excuse and don’t like it. “barely afford anything” often times means, “don’t buy any music CDs, but I will P2P anything, and live concerts are nice if they’re free. And I go out to eat at a small joint 2 times a week”.

Don’t want to start one-of-those-posts, but you gotta reward those who are working their butts off to provide free software!

Besides, if everyone who has downloaded off of this site gave $5, it would probably end up saving everyone a load of time.

    Anyways, just thoughts. Appreciate honesty.

I dont think that would go down to well with opensource crowed , but asking for donations to help with performing updates, with actual members of MLUG participating in coding , with an openwiki for us to keep us informed of changes suggestion for each type of Computer , having a Dell , Toshiba , HP wikiprojects ect? where both we can help you , and you can help us , this would speed up and split problems , with actual owners of each laptop rather than you having to deal with 70 different distros , scripts and updates , supply the script ask people how we can advance future editions , sort out bugs , plus get more people on board with more donations , personly i cant afford 40 bucks for gas let alone a cd … but ill have 6 bucks here 5 bucks there … and probably in a year give you more than the 40 your asking …
but thats just my thought ,, i do appreciate everything you have done , and having a community like this is and has been so helpful , i know without your work there would be no Ubuntu on my Laptop and many others too.

    Hi john,
I do understand that time is precious and time spent on customising the Distro has to be paid back. But dont you see that there are thousands of computers having the linus on their laptops and ati hardware because of you.People know you because of what you have done for the community.I am an indian living in Dubai and i like many other people keep on monitoring your blog to see how our friend has helped us in making the distro (linus) more pleasing to workon.Your customised distribution has reached in india (200 kms away from the main city Mumbai-named shriwardhan)where there are frequent electricity and internet problem.I have distributed many copies to my town friends and they are all happy.(many of us have the system u r having). There have been many hardcore Windwoes user using ur customised version of this linux distro.infact an internet cafe has been setup having your customised version - to get rid of govt officers asking for being bribed to use cracked versions of windows in the cafe.
would you not like to be a major portion who has helped people in this manner…
We are just asking to share what you enjoy personally for being expert in this field….

ur final thought over the subject awaited….

Thank you all for your comments. I will continue to provide my services as I have. This idea was not so much about a replacement to what I do now, but more of adding more value to what I do.

Value adding is crucial. So as you’ll read in my latest post, I’ve added the services that open more opportunity to the community. Rather than just a blog you go check now and then, I’m willing to go a step further (for a fee of course) and provide a more valuable and more quality service to my readers.

Again, you all are awesome and I appreciate all your comments and remarks!
