Dell Inspiron 6400 Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Install Script

Ok, the CD is not finished yet, but I did get some scripting done for you all. If you’d like an easy way to configure your Dell Inspiron Ubuntu install once you’ve installed the base system, do this:

1. Download the following script into your home directory and run it.
Download Script
Run it with the following command:
sh ~/config.sh

Here’s the Readme file:
Download Readme

What this does:
If you just installed Gutsy (7.10) on your Dell Inspiron system, you will have poor resolution, no WiFi, and other issues. To fix all this without any difficulty, run the script. It will upgrade your system and then reboot it. Once it’s rebooted, run the script again from your home directory and it will then proceed to enable the restricted drivers, install XGL and Compiz-Fusion, and even install some extra Compiz plugins if you choose!

Hope this helps!

Enjoy!

John

[EDIT]

Oops! Had to fix a small mistake, the scripts should work now.

    Wow, this is excellent.
    Thanks John!

I’m gonna give this a whirl right now and I’ll get back to you with some the results.

    Hello again,

Had a bit of hard drive trouble that prevented me from creating a new partition, but I got that all sorted out and now got everything installed.

So far everything is working fine. I would say that some the compiz effects feel a little choppier than they did with the Feisty install disk. Grabbing a window and moving it around is especially choppy. I also have to figure out whatever plugin is causing the windows to to be attracted to the bottom of the screen like a magnet when I move them around.

So far so good though. Thanks again and I’ll get back to you with more info once I’ve played around.

This “sticky” activity of the windows is usually a result of the setting in Wobbly Windows called “Snap Inverted”. Uncheck it.

If you don’t have Wobbly Windows enabled, do that first. Compiz starts out with some dumb (in my opinion) settings. Like no cube. I enable the following in the Advanced Settings:
    Desktop Cube
    Rotate Cube
    Widget Layer
    Cube Reflection
    Wobbly Windows
    Annotate
    Screenshot
    Shift Switcher

When you enable some of these it will ask if you want to disable the conflicting one, say yes (or whatever the option is.)

Excellent. Thanks John, that sticky windows business was driving me up the wall.

This is my first experience with Gutsy and now that everything is set up properly it really feels like everything works a bit faster compared to Feisty. Maybe that’s just b/c I have a fresh install.

I have a few questions if you don’t mind.
    1) Have you managed to get fonts to look right with Google search results? It looks pretty bad for some reason.

    2) What do you recommend for widgets?

    3) Do you have a donation page or anything? I know this stuff probably takes up a lot of your time and it’s been a big help for me (and others, I expect).

    Thanks!
