My Little Ubuntu Guide

Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 Custom Live CD

Following are instructions on installing Ubuntu preconfigured for the Dell Inspiron 6400 w/ ATI. This guide may also work for other brands that use the ATI driver. This “Dell 6400 Ubuntu Live CD” will install a working Ubuntu system with ATI drivers, WiFi drivers, Modem Drivers, Compiz-Fusion (3D Eyecandy), and several other applications (see below in About This CD).

Follow these instructions to download and install from the “Dell 6400 Ubuntu Live CD”:

Step 1: Download the Custom Live CD image here:Download Here

Step 2: Burn the iso to a CD and boot your Dell 6400 Inspiron with ATI from it. You’ll boot into a “normal” Live CD.

Step 3: Double Click the Install icon and install to your system.

Step 4:
Boot your new system and login to a normal Gnome session (NOT XGL).

Step 5: Double Click the “FinishUp” icon and wait for it to finish installing updates.
IMPORTANT: You will be required to press ENTER during this phase when it prompts you for the location of the build files. Just hit ENTER and the script will continue.

Step 6: Reboot your system. Upon reboot you can then select the “Gnome-xgl” session and login to your new system with Compiz-Fusion!

About This CD:

The Dell 6400 Ubuntu Live CD is configured for ATI systems. This will most likely work on other brands, such as HP, but I’ve not tested this. It is configured with the ATI driver and the Broadcom Wireless driver for systems with the bcm43xx wifi hardware (such is the case with systems that have the Dell 1390).

The Live CD contains the following software preinstalled and will also install this software on a normal install:
1. Compiz-Fusion (Eyecandy for Grownups)
2. Nautilus scripts for opening Nautilus as Root, and others.
3. i8K Utility for Hardware Monitoring such as CPU Temp.
4. ScanbuttonD for Operating Canon Scanners
5. Automatix2 for Installing Codecs, VMWare, and TONS of other useful software. Learn more about Automatix at www.GetAutomatix.com.
6. As Mentioned, ATI and WiFi Drivers.
7. Suspend and Horizontal scrolling works!

After Running the “FinishUp” Script the Following is Performed on Your New System:
1. Build Tools Installed (necessary for installing Modem driver)
2. Dell Modem Driver Installed
3. DeVeDe DVD Authoring Software Installed
4. Cinelerra Video Editing Suite Installed
5. gSTM Proxy Tunneling Software Installed
6. Kompozer (formerly nvu) HTML Editing Software Installed
7. System Upgrade Including Kernel Upgrade (necessary for running VMWare, Beryl and others correctly)

Have fun!

NOTE:
You can download the ISO’s md5 file here: MD5

Great news! I am downloading this now - but I do have a question…How do I install this to dual-boot with Vista Ultimate? If I need to reinstall Vista its OK.

Thanks for all your hard work!!!
